Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre

The Shot

Facility Overview:

Due to the high demands and costs of ice at peaj times, we have designed a facility exclusively for the OFF-ICE training of hockey players and goaltenders. Get away from the monotony of on-ice hockey practices and come enjoy a new training experience with our 1500 square foot synthetic ice rink. In conjunction with our synthetic ice we also have our weightroom, which is great for warm-up, core training, plyometrics, and custom player/team training. We feel this combination is key for the development of any hockey player, at any level!

Mission Statement:

To provide all hockey players with year round availability and considerably improving overall hockey skill, strength, and stamina while escaping the normalcy of regular on-ice practices.  Whatever age you may be, a warm environment and comfortable surroundings will improve your training efforts- the SHOT will compliment your on-ice game!

The SHOT Advantage

Your first question will be "Why would I take hockey programs on synthetic ice when all of the same programs on synthetic ice when all of the same programs are available on real ice?"

  • Synthetic ice provides year round availability and replaces the scarce and expensive "Real ice".
  • The natural resistance produced by synthetic ice creates higher strength and conditioning components (85-90%) glide compared to regular ice. Players must create momentum and movement, while at the same time effectively working their muscle strength and stamina.
  • Instructor to Player ratio: the SHOT will focus on individual skill development. With our naturally smaller group sizes (8-12 max), instructors are able to give each person more direct and timely feedback. Identifying and correcting weaknesses on the spot!
  • Synthetic ice is merely the most economical and efficient way to compliment your on-ice game both physically and mentally.

Step away from the normalcy of regular on-ice practices, and experience hockey in a unique, but complimentary training environment with The SHOT at UBC!
